Born 1969, Auckland (NZ). Lives and works in Auckland.
Peter Stichbury creates painted portraits that explore themes relating to observations of human consciousness and emerging sciences. These real and imagined figures, including UFO witnesses and survivors of near-death experiences, skirt the boundaries of science and the knowable, hinting at something inefffable yet human at their borders.
Stichbury received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Elam School of Fine Arts, Auckland in 1997. Significant solo exhibitions include: Ecology of Souls, Michael Lett, Auckland (2021); Animals of God, Fine Arts, Sydney (2019); Peter Stichbury: Anatomy of a Phenomenon, Nevada Museum of Art, Reno (2016) and The Alumni, Te Tuhi, Auckland (2008). His work has also been featured in group presentations including: Among Friends: Three Views of a Collection, The Flag Art Foundation, New York City (2022); Now, Then, Next: Time and the Contemporary, Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū, Christchurch (2019); Human Condition, The Hospital, Los Angeles (2016); Portraiture: the Art of Social Commentary, Te Tuhi, Auckland (2000) and Measure of Strangeness, Artspace, Auckland (2000).
