H

NZ$20.00

H was published by Govett-Brewster Art Gallery with the support of Pump House Gallery, Michael Lett Gallery and Creative New Zealand on the occasion of the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery exhibition ‘Sriwhana Spong: a hook but no fish’, 12 May – 22 July 2018. Originally staged at London’s Pump House Gallery (10 January – 1 April 2018) as Spong’s first solo-exhibition in the United Kingdom, ‘a hook but no fish’ explored the Lingua Ignota, the invented language of Hildegard von Bingen, a 12th-century Benedictine mystic. London-based Spong returned to New Zealand as the Gallery’s Creative New Zealand 2018 Aotearoa New Zealand Artist in Residence to restage the exhibition. Curated by Govett-Brewster assistant curator Tendai John Mutambu, the second iteration of ‘a hook but no fish’ included new works produced during the residency.

Commissioned to follow the exhibition, ‘Sriwhana Spong: H’ significantly expands the artist’s project beyond the exhibition through a set of new writings. Edited by Spong and with an introduction by Ned McConnell (Pump House Gallery), the book features new writing by Kate Briggs (Piet Zwart Institute), Vera Mey (SOAS University of London), Francesco Ventrella (University of Sussex) and Jan Verwoert (Piet Zwart Institute).

Designed by Sandra Kassenaar, ‘Sriwhana Spong: H’ features a bespoke typeface throughout and full page gloss illustrations from Spong’s film ‘a fish but no hook’.
